Below is a profile of today’s saint, Blessed Kateri, Lily of the Mohawks:
Daughter of a Christian Algonquin woman captured by Iroquois and married to a non-Christian Mohawk chief. Orphaned during a smallpox epidemic, which left her with a scarred face and impaired eyesight. Converted and baptized in 1676 by Father Jacques de Lamberville, a Jesuit missionary. Shunned and abused by relatives for her faith. Escaped through 200 miles of wilderness to the Christian Native American village of Sault-Sainte-Marie. Took a vow of chastity in 1679. Known for spirituality and austere lifestyle. Miracle worker. Her grave became a pilgrimage site and place of miracles for Christian Native Americans and French colonists. First Native American proposed for canonization, her cause was started in 1884 under Pope Leo XIII.

Homilies #110 - Monday Homily on the martyrs of Gorkum, Holland (5min)>>> Play |
|

Ave Maria!
Today the Church celebrates the memorial of the martyrs of Gorkum, where in 1572, 19 martyrs - 11 of them Franciscans - were hanged by Calvinist dissenters in Holland for their two-fold belief in the Real Presence of Our Lord in the Eucharist and the primacy of the Bishop of Rome.
Dying for the sake of the truth is a foreign concept to modern man, and to many modern Catholics. Today people willing sacrifice their bodies and their souls for the sake of pleasure, but how few and how blessed are those who are still willing to die for the sake of truth! It’s always better in God’s eyes to renounce your head and save your faith rather than renounce your faith to save your head.
(I borrow that aphorism from Fr. Rutler and his observations on the Reign of Terror in late 18th-century France, where priests and bishops were given the choice by the State to either preach Enlightenment doctrines and remain in the pulpit or to preach the doctrines of Christ and head off - literally - to the guillotine on their way to Heaven.)

Ave Maria!
The disciples of John approached Jesus and said, €œWhy do we and the Pharisees fast much, but your disciples do not fast?€?
What was the reason for the feasting of Jesus’ disciples while He walked the earth? Some scribes held that Christ’s association with sinners was a means of self-indulgence rather than evangelization. Were they right? Come and listen to Father Joachim clarify the misunderstanding in today’s homily.
