St. Timothy, Bishop and Martyr

Red 3rd Class

St. Timothy, who is the best-known disciple of St. Paul, was bishop of Ephesus in Asia Minor. He was stoned to death by pagans A.D. 97.

INTROIT ¤ Eccles. 45. 30.
Amen. The Lord made to him a covenant of peace, and made him a prince: that the dignity of the priesthood should be to him forever. -- (Ps. 131. 1). O Lord, remember David: and all his meekness. V.: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. The Lord made to him a covenant of peace, and made him a prince: that the dignity of the priesthood should be to him forever.

EPISTLE ¤ Timothy 6. 11-16.
Lesson from the Epistle of Blessed Paul the Apostle to Timothy.
Lectio Epistolae beati Pauli Apostoli ad Timotheum.
[St. Paul writes to his beloved Timothy to instruct him in his duties.]
Carissimi: Sectare iustitiam, pietatem, fidem, caritatem, patientiam, mansuetudinem. Amen.    Dearly beloved, Follow after justice, godliness, faith, charity, patience, mildness. Fight the good fight of faith: lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art called, and hast confessed a good confession before many witnesses. I charge thee before God, who quickeneth all things, and before Christ Jesus, who gave testimony under Pontius Pilate, a good confession, that thou keep the commandment without spot, blameless, unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, which in his times he shall show who is the Blessed and only Mighty, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; Who only hath immortality, and inhabiteth light inaccessible, whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and empire everlasting. Amen.

GRADUAL ¤ Ps. 88. 21-23.
Inveni David servum meum, oleo sancto meo unxi eum: manus enim mea auxiliabitur ei, et brachium meum confortabit eum. V.: Nihil proficiet inimicus in eo, et filius iniquitatis non nocebit ei.
Alleluia, alleluia. V.: Tu es sacerdos in aeternum, secundum ordinem Melchisedech. Alleluia.
I have found David, My servant: with My holy oil I have anointed him: for My hand shall help him, and My arm shall strengthen him. V.: The enemy shall have no advantage over him, nor the son of iniquity have power to hurt him.
Alleluia, alleluia. V.: Thou art a priest for ever, according to the order of Melchisedech. Alleluia.

After Septuagesima the Alleluia and the Verse Tu es sacerdos . . . are omitted and the following is said instead:
TRACT ¤ Ps. 20. 3, 4.
V.: Quoniam praevenisti eum in benedictionibus dulcedinis. Thou hast given him his heart's desire; and hast not withholden from him the will of his lips. V.: For Thou hast prevented him with blessings of sweetness. V.: Thou hast set on his head a crown of precious stones.

GOSPEL ¤ Luke. 14. 26-33.
† Continuation of the holy Gospel according to St. Luke.
† Sequentia sancti Evangelii secundum Lucam.
[The necessity of renouncing all to follow Christ. The martyr carries his cross.]
At that time, Jesus said to His disciples: If any man come to Me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea and his own life also, He cannot be my disciple. And whosoever doth not carry his cross and come after Me, cannot be my disciple. For which of you having a mind to build a tower, doth not first sit down, and reckon the charges that are necessary, whether he have wherewithal to finish it: lest, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that see it begin to mock him, saying: This man began to build, and was not able to finish. Or what king, about to go to make war against another king, doth not first sit down, and think whether he be able, with ten thousand, to meet him that, with twenty thousand, cometh against him? Or else, whilst the other is yet afar off, sending an embassy, he desireth conditions of peace. So likewise every one of you that doth not renounce all that he possesseth, cannot be My disciple.

OFFERTORY ¤ Ps. 88. 25.
My truth and My mercy shall be with him: and in My Name shall his horn be exalted.

PREFACE
The Common Preface
Cum quibus et nostras voces, ut admitti jubeas, deprecamur, supplici confessione dicentes:    It it truly meet and just, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto Thee, O holy Lord, Father almighty, everlasting God, through Christ our Lord. Through whom the Angels praise Thy Majesty, the Dominations worship it, the Powers stand in awe. The heavens and the heavenly hosts together with the blessed Seraphim in triumphant chorus unite to celebrate it. Together with them, we entreat Thee, that Thou mayest bid our voices also to be admitted, while we say in lowly praise:

COMMUNION ¤ Ps. 88. 36-38.
Once I have sworn by My holiness: his seed shall endure for ever; and his throne as the sun before Me, and as the moon perfect for ever: and a faithful witness in heaven.

POSTCOMMUNION
Refecti participatione muneris sacri, quaesumus Domine Deus noster: ut cuius exsequimur cultum, intercedente beato Timotheo Martyre tuo atque Pontifice, sentiamus effectum.
